Russia may ban use of nitrofurans for beef-producing animals and poultry

Russia may impose a ban on the use of the cheapest group of antibiotics for beef-producing animals – nitrofurans. Such ban is already in force in EU. IPO “Roskachestvo” gave the idea to the Federal Veterinary And Phytosanitary Surveillance Service after researching chicks meat. According to the organization data, nitrofurans are found to be in almost half of all Russian poultry, imported by the leading manufacturers, reports Krasnodar Media, with reference to the “Izvestiya” newspaper.

In a letter signed by Elena Sarattseva, the deputy director of “Roskachestvo”  in the Federal Veterinary And Phytosanitary Surveillance (copy is available in “Izvestiya”) is said that now the technical regulations of EEU “On food safety” does not rate the amount of several groups of antibiotics, including nitrofurans in poultry meat. As notes, Elena Sarattseva in countries of EU imposed “a complete ban on the use of nitrofurans in veterinary medicine, as well as on the content of any residual amounts of products in in the products of animal origin”.

“We believe that the differences in the sanitary requirements of the Russian and European legislation….interfere with the export potential in the dynamically developing livestock market and is in need of adjustment”, — writes representative of “Roskachestvo”.

Spokesman of the Federal Veterinary And Phytosanitary Surveillance Service, Julia Melano tells “Izvestiya” that department “works closely with Roskachestvo” and will review the proposal. However, FVAPS is unlikely to initiate changes of technical regulations: that issue supervises Federal Service on Customers’ Rights Protection and Human Well-being.

-We do not have the right of initiative legislation. Our experts can express their opinion and submit it to the Ministry of Agriculture, — explains Julia Melano.

The Federal Veterinary And Phytosanitary Surveillance Service gave no comment on this situation.
